How can I be there for someone with anxiety?

I am close with someone who has anxiety and depression, and I want to better understand how to be there for them when they need.
Well, for context they’ve tried opening up to me about it but every time they do I don’t have a response of any sort, and every time it happens i am we extremely disappointed in myself and it tears me apart, I want to be there as best I can, and provide a safe comforting environment for them to share their emotions without jt feeling pointless, as they’ve told me that it does before.
I’ve tried researching and understanding anxiety, but everywhere I look it’s a psychologist jt a therapist telling me what it feels like, and to be honest I don’t think it’s very helpful because everything they say sounds like it’s from a book. I want to actually be able to help and not feel like a therapist to them.
I’ve tried looking, and there isn’t any actual people telling me what to do and what they tell me is the most basic of basic, from the same script just in different words.
If anyone is so gracious to share, please tell me about your experience with anxiety and how others helped you.
Im really trying to grow and be there for them when it’s most needed, please help me! 😣🙏
