UPP is way more than just the prime defenders prequel
It kind of breaks my heart that UPP is often just talked about like a spinoff, because it is so well done, and honestly, pretty goddam emotional.
Im going to come out with a bold statement and say that Unwitness Protection Program is my favourite jrwi show. It is short, but it nails the atmosphere while still being really funny at times. I also dont think theres another dnd campaign in general that comes to mind that is more thematically strong and consistent.
It's hard to explain exactly but it has such a bittersweet nostalgic essence of growing up. UPP constantly reinforces the message that we need to cherish the little time we have with the people we love. It may sound like a stretch to some but I do think the danger these teenagers regularly face aswell as the adults that die in the series is a sort of allegory for what happens when we start to get older and people begin to leave our lives.
Its not done in a way that feels cynical though, it feels like being told to just hold our loved ones close and treasure this time we have, which is why I think this series has such a strangely cosy vibe despite being a horror.
I could go on about this but this is probably already too long for most people to bother reading but I just had to rant a little, Unwitness protection program genuinely means a lot to me so I guess thank you to Bizly, the cast, and everyone who's worked on it.
