Is this a normal amount of gunk at the top of the crank case? 2018 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T Limited
Hello all,
My family's 2018 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T Limited recently threw an engine code, P0507 — Idle Control System RPM Higher Than Expected as my parents were driving. I pulled out my scan tool and noticed that LONGFT1 was at 22% and the Throttle body was stuck open at 1.7%. The car was dumping about 22% more gas into the engine and was trying to prevent it from revving to high, at least that what I understood.
On account of the car being a DI engine, I suspected a gunked up PCV valve. Sure enough, I was right, but I would never have expected it to be this bad!
I solved the engine code by replacing the PCV valve of course - LONGFT1 dropped to 14% and the Throttle Body started to slowly drop til zero. After driving it, it feels alot better and over time, LONGFT1 returned to zero.
BVefore I put it back in though, I decided to check the crank case with the cheapass boroscope I have, and while I couldn't get a good look inside, it looks REALLY DIRTY. I also saw that brown looking thing in the middle of the below photo and I think that is one of the valves. I am concerned that all that gunk is going to harden and carbonize to then ruin the engine... Is this normal for a DI engine and do they just have all this sludge and soot at the top? If it is not, how would I clean it?
