🎬 We’re continuing our Behind the Scenes series—this time with a shot from the new episodes of Morvaine!

Mar, the story’s author, captioned it with a mysterious line:

🤔 What do you think happened in this town, and what awaits the characters ahead?

• Is there a character from IoF or Morvaine who is “independent,” so to speak—one who “writes themselves”?

> — Everyone does something like that from time to time. But when it comes to the most “unexpected” characters in terms of ideas coming to me, it would probably be Isaac and Shade.

• How old is Phantom?

>— 31.

• Is the lore difficult to work with? And what about the other nuances? How and where do you study topics that are unfamiliar to you?

>— Developing any idea takes time and effort. In the case of Morvaine, I like the subject matter and enjoy immersing myself in it, but when it came to the Dark Web, I had to look into some rather unpleasant things.

• There are a lot of different references and Easter eggs in Morvaine (Fight Club, Blade Runner), and the characters often talk in memes. I’m curious at what stage they make their way into the text and what “criteria” a reference has to meet to make it into the chapters?

>— Actually, it happens pretty spontaneously 😅 It depends on whether a reference comes to mind while I’m writing a scene or not. It was never a goal, but I enjoy referencing classics/memes since the characters live in the modern world; it makes them feel a little more alive.

• How are cutscenes created, and are there any funny moments from the development process?

>— There are a lot of posts about cutscenes on the channel) As for funny moments — I really like working from the office because you can ask absolutely anything out loud at any moment. The latest one was trying to find a synonym for the word “bastard,” but not a rude variation — a sexy one, and we spent 10 minutes going through swear words 😅

• Does Kaiden have any traumatic experiences, or experience with violence against him, and did that lead to his interest in understanding criminals and his fear of being touched?

>— We’ll find out about that in an update)

• Will Phantom’s past be revealed in the story?

>— Yes. We will definitely learn the backstory of all the main characters and some of the secondary ones)

• How tall is Shade and when is his birthday? We already know he’s a Leo, but we don’t know the exact date… I’d really love to know.

>— I’ve already written that I don’t like giving exact numbers when it comes to height (except when they’re required in character sheets), because everyone imagines themselves in the MC’s place. What feels like a “tall favorite” to me might be not tall enough for someone else, or the opposite — too much.) So I can only estimate the favorites’ heights in comparison to each other. Shade is the tallest in IC, while in Morvaine that spot belongs to Isaac.

>As for his date of birth: August 19.

• I’m really interested in finding out what happened to Chloe and Shade’s parents, or more specifically: it was written that Chloe’s mother “left.” Does that mean she left the family or died? What happened to Chloe’s father after she moved away? And also, what happened to Shade’s father? What kind of relationship did they have? The story mentioned that even his father didn’t know where Shade was.

>— I really love questions that dig deeper into the story, and I’m glad that you ask them, but I don’t think it would be fair to “add” details to the story on the blog that weren’t in the novel itself)

>That’s exactly why I often don’t answer questions like these. If these details were left off-screen, then they remain up to your imagination)

• And as for the work itself, I’d really like to know in general how the story was created. How did the idea come about and develop into a full-fledged plot? Do you sometimes consult with other authors? Do you read/play each other’s stories?))

>— The beginning of development turned out to be more difficult than planned, because while writing the episodes, I came up with a radically different vision for the plot (the one you’re reading now), and I had to rework everything from scratch.

>I try to read my colleagues’ stories (if only I had more time...)

• What came first: Morvaine’s setting or its visual image?

>— The setting (mysticism, horror, modernity) was the first thing that appeared for the story. Originally, I was supposed to write something different, something closer to everyday life, but I was offered this option, and after IoF I wanted to stir things up and try something new :)

• How does the final appearance of the characters come about? Do you already have it prepared in your head beforehand, or do you give the artists a set of internal characteristics and let them create from there?

>— Usually, we come to the artist with a detailed file: we describe the favorite, their personality, atmosphere, and attach references. These can be actors, models, or simply the character’s “vibe,” and the artist makes sketches. From there, we make corrections/choose between them and gradually refine the character.

• Is there censorship for the writers here? The subject matter of Morvaine seems quite brutal. Does someone monitor things to make sure the author doesn’t cross a line? Or do you completely decide for yourself what will be included in the story?

>— I try to keep an eye on this myself and bring all controversial moments up for discussion; because Morvaine’s themes (ghettos, crime, horror) inherently involve immoral actions by the characters/some dirtiness/jump scares, and you need to think about the line that shouldn’t be crossed more often than usual. I try to break up the tension with humor so that players can have a chance to relax during the gaming experience. I’ll also say that not all of my jokes pass my own censorship either) because writing in the flow and proofreading an episode with a fresh mind are two completely different things 😄
