My first language isn't as widely spoken as English is. So I can't imagine a similar situation in my mother tongue. In fact, you get viewed as an uneducated person when you don't speak the standard accent in official spaces(eg. school, college, political spaces, when speaking in public etc.) although other accents have a good number of speakers. They will still see you as a weird person at least.

What is the situation with English? Say a Brit started to speak American english to people in their social circle, how would their environment view them? They wouldn't be seen as an uneducated person, I guess, but would they be seen as weird attention-seekers? I also wonder how hard it is for a native speaker to switch accent. Because I speak the standard accent, and other accents aren't as documented as the standard one, I have never been able to switch accent in my mother tongue.
