Overjet advice

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some honest advice.

I started braces mainly for a deep overbite and crowding. I’ve now had braces for about 1.5 years. My teeth are straight(er) and my orthodontist says the overbite is essentially corrected.

Orthodontist wanted to stop a few months ago but I pointed out that I still felt my overjet was noticeable. After that, they continued treatment for around 4 more months, including putting brackets on my very back molars to try to improve things further.

Now they want to stop again but I am still not happy with the overjet and only for the first time they are telling me that the only real way to significantly reduce the remaining overjet would likely be:

- extractions + retraction, or

- jaw surgery.

This is what’s frustrating/confusing me, because this possibility was never discussed with me earlier in treatment. If extractions had been discussed at the beginning, I may well have considered them. But now, after already being in braces for 1.5 years, they’re saying it would take many more months of treatment if I wanted to go down that route.

Also they said they don’t really recommend extractions for me aesthetically, because they think it could flatten my profile and make the area around my mouth look more sunken as I age.

So now I feel stuck because:

- functionally my bite is apparently much improved,

- they say my overbite is corrected,

- my teeth are straighter

- but the overjet is significant

I’d really appreciate opinions on:

  1. Based on the photos, do you agree that my overbite looks corrected and my teeth generally look straight/aligned?

  2. Does this sound like a reasonable compromise result in adult orthodontics?

3 If you were in my position, would you stop treatment now or push extractions?

I’m tired of braces tbh but I don’t want to regret stopping too early.

Thanks :)
