As the title says, how do I make friends with similar interests?

I feel like the friends I have are maybe people who I would have been friends with at school, but at nearly 40, we have different interests / priorities. I have a 5 year old and I work full time, so I don't have loads of free time. I enjoy reading (not really into chick-lit and the friends I have are into those types of books) and cooking. Obviously self improvement is a big thing for me, but the people I am friends with aren't. I know joining clubs etc would be good, I'm just not sure where to fit it in!
