help encourage the use of tablet as AAC?
i'm not sure if this is the right flair or space to be asking for advice like this but i help my sister a lot with her 4 kids. her daughter is non verbal (age 5) and goes to ABA/OT throughout the week. my sister is not super big on getting her a tablet to use as communication device. when i type that out it seems kinda harsh since she is non verbal but she has a pretty bad 'addiction' to the phone and screens as it is. throws huge fits when she sees one but can't have it. she will scroll youtube for hours straight if allowed. so we've limited her screen time dramatically in the last few months. the lovely ladies in her therapies have recommended the use of AAC devices a few times but my sister is dead set on she won't use it as intended and end up breaking it when she can't get access to youtube. and that she can communicate with pointing, leading, and the sounds she makes and that the device might hinder her in wanting to talk since it does the talking for her. i disagree as i've seen it be a great aid for so many other families. i guess im just asking for advice on how to nicely explain to her that it will be a good thing for her daughter.
she is my favorite niece lol so i am always just finding ways to encourage her progress and support her needs. it is not my child so i do not press the issue often but the days i see her frustration grow out of not being understood hurts and i just know it would help relieve a little stress from the both of them.
