The state of AI covers is brutal

I deeply believe in either making my own covers or hiring a professional for my own works but the evidence is all around me that using AI covers is either not punished or actively rewarded. You can go to any of the bestseller lists on amazon and half the front page will be blatantly ai covere. Indie pub, trad pub it doesn’t matter. It’s gotten to the point where even in physical stores most of the releases will clearly at least in part AI generated.

The internets backlash against this just doesn’t seem to track how the actual market behaves. For every redditor on here that says they’ll boycott, 10 people already purchased the book.

It’s rough spending hours or hundreds of dollars on a cover and being surrounded by other books performing equally or reaching top 10 with slop covers.

I think back to a study on cokes recent ai slop christmas commercial. If you followed only internet posts you would think coke would be going out of business. Instead, consumers rated it one of their greatest commercials ever and sales performed at near record levels after.

It’s all so bleak, especially with the tech improving. Is this just the way it is now? Are the beautiful pulp 70-80s covers a thing of the past?
