To preface, I don't want to come off as homophobic or anything like that, I'm just curious as to the opinions of the general community. I'm a fan of Jordan Lucas. I watched him play at GCU and I think he's a very solid player overall.
Most of you already know about the Jordan Lucas and the incident with the commentator implying that he should have been "popped." Obviously, implying that someone from your team should physically assault another person is objectively abhorrent. But, I feel like the statement itself was more of a commentary of Jordan Lucas very blatantly taunting during that game, rather than what many people believe was a homophobic remark.
I grew up playing volleyball and one of the standard rules was to keep your celebrations on your side of the net. Staring, talking, and pointing are generally frowned upon. (I think this is dumb, most sports let you get away with more taunting in my experience) Usually players can get away with celebrating "towards" the other side, where they celebrate the direction they were already facing and kind of pretend like they aren't looking at someone in particular. But I think Lucas has a very noticeable habit of just flat out pointing at people.
For example, during that UCI game (around 7:00 from the sideline perspective on YT) Jordan Lucas celebrates a point by looking at the other team, talking, and noticeably pointing to another player. In his Instagram post on the April 18th, he does essentially the same act of looking through the net and then pointing at Tread Rosenthal. Obviously this doesn't happen every point or every set, but I think the volume of these acts is noticeable.
So, in my personal opinion, I think the commentator was commenting more on what should be considered taunting, rather than Jordan Lucas' sexuality. I think the comment was worded incredibly poorly and he should have been reprimanded regardless, but I think it's a distinction worth making.
