Kingwood Middle School Launches New Weapons Detection System

Kingwood Middle School began using the Evolv Weapons Detection system yesterday, August 12th as part of Humble ISD’s expanded campus safety procedures. The system has been installed at the school’s main entrance and bus entrance, and all middle school students will be required to pass through it when entering the building each day. Humble ISD has previously used the technology at district high schools and Turner Stadium.

School officials noted that Evolv is a weapons detection system rather than a traditional metal detector. Certain everyday items, including laptops, large binders, metal water bottles, umbrellas and eyeglass cases, may trigger an alert and could need to be removed before students pass through.

Students arriving early for athletics or other school activities will also be screened. KMS said slight delays may occur as students adjust to the new process and encouraged students to arrive before 8:15 AM.

Humble ISD Adding E-Bike and E-Scooter Permit Requirement for Students

Humble ISD is introducing new safety requirements for students who ride and park e-bikes or e-scooters on district campuses during the 2026-2027 school year according to an email sent out to parents. Beginning September 8th, students will be required to display a permit sticker showing that both the student and a parent have completed the district’s required safety training and acknowledged its riding guidelines.

Parents must first review the district’s E-Bike/E-Scooter Safety Presentation and complete a Parent Signature Form. Students will then complete their own safety presentation and acknowledgement before receiving the permit sticker. The district says lawful Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes and motor-assisted scooters may be used in accordance with Texas law. Class 3 e-bikes may only be used by students who are at least 15 years old.

Humble ISD is also reminding students to wear properly fitted helmets, follow traffic laws and operate e-bikes and e-scooters responsibly.

From the blog:

Work continues on the Northpark Drive Expansion project, with the Loop 494 intersection expected to remain closed until approximately September 12th while contractors focus on bridge construction. The Phase I Northpark drainage system from I-69 past Russell Palmer Road is complete.

At Loop 494, crews still need to construct several large bridge columns and supporting caps. The intersection is being used as a construction zone because of the size of the equipment and the limited working space near the railroad tracks.
