Designed and completed this mini wooden shrine in 3days. Where should I improvise?

I'm a hobbyist wood worker (still learning) from chennai, india.

This client was referred by my friend and was in a tight situation. He bought a new house he had completed the interiors but in foyer area there was a countersunk space in the wall left by the construction company for placing a deity statue.

He wanted to make that space a attention grabber, a welcoming sight for guests. I jumped in with a curiosity whether I could complete this within the timeline since for me design review process itself will take couple of days to finalize. But surprisingly it got approved on the second revision (first image).

Now the choice of materials within the budget: instead of multiple wood species for different colors, I went with staining teak wood with walnut, rose wood and natural teak for the tiles. Frame is made of swedish pine wood.

I've faced several hurdles to figure like the frame style, light integration (client requested), led driver to be hidden somewhere safe, the depth of the wall cutout is around 4" but client wants to extend it 9" so that he could place a statue with wider base. I thought the tiling and pattern will be harder but it turns out to be the easiest part in this project.

Finally I've test fitted everything, there was a small difference between 3d mockup and final product. Now I've to find a durable top coat that have to be atleast touchdry to be ready for installation. Selected a PU finish allowed it to dry for the neevous 8 hours.

Brought it to the site a hour before the function starts!

After all now looking back, in what way it could be done better?

Is this interior rework worth it after 10 years?

This is my close friend's room, it's been a decade since his house built, he wanted to update the interior for the arrival of his newborn. He wanted to make it baby-proof, clean and organized.

Design:
I planned to create a drywall partition to separate the Dressing room, Bathroom, Dress Closets out of the view since it is making most of the messy look in his room. For access, a hidden door concept was designed. Center piece will be a custom starlight setup tracked on a real nebula, my friend insisted to have a ceiling fan directly above the bed (tried my best to convince him). Designed a floating TV cabinet with space for console.

Challenge:
The false ceiling was done 2011, so we checked for stability, rusting, water seepage, but there isn't any. But according to our plan, we have to support a drywall partition almost 17 feet long and 10 feet high.

What we did:

  1. We found a support channel near our partition mark, we cut through the section and added additional supports on both sides.
  2. To increase steadiness, we used mild steel square tubes for base frame, then added jets and flooring section. We used Ramco calcium silicate boards 8mm on both sides.
  3. After plastering and door installation, louvers were added to mask the door.

Let me know, will you trade the size of your room for aesthetics?

Designed and built a 42" magnetic demonstration board

A few months back, a requirement landed with us through a contact - Chola chess academy in Chennai needed a large-format magnetic demonstration board for their coaching hall.

Curious if coaches find standard demo boards too small for bigger groups?
