Question about VA Form 22-5490 for son turning 18, and form 21-674c.
I’ve been reading through a bunch of similar questions/posts but nothing exactly like my situation… still, sorry for the repeat and thank you for any help!
My son just graduated high school and turns 18 this summer. He is already accepted at a college and will start this fall… if we can afford it. Our state doesn’t offer his major, so he’s going out of state nearby but with in-state rates which is great, but this is messing with scholarships and financial help.
My son isn’t 18 yet so I printed the form and filled it out. I already signed and mailed the 22-5490 to the regional (eastern) VA office in Buffalo. I haven’t heard anything from that. What will they do to let me know they received it had if he is approved for the education benefits? I guess I should add I’m 100% P&T, does that help with the decision to give him/us some help? Will they update something on my VA account? He doesn’t have any account because he isn’t old enough to create one, so I don’t know how they’ll let him know.
Shortly after mailing that form a couple weeks ago, I received a letter from the VA saying payments for my son will be discontinued on his 18th birthday. Along with the letter they sent a 21-674 and a 22-5490, but like I said I already filled out, signed and mailed the 5490. I don’t do anything with the 21-674 right? I don’t need to get paid for him, he’s going to be out of the house so all I need is help with the tuition which I think the 22-5490 will cover. From the letter explanations I think it’s saying I don’t need to fill out the 21-674 if he’s going to be getting paid through the DEA/5490. Does that sound right?
