How to Fix macOS Tahoe on Supported Intel Macs
*Change to Sequoia*
This post is for anyone with an Intel Mac that supports macOS Tahoe and is having a terrible experience with it.
With that out of the way, here's the issue: macOS Tahoe causes Intel Macs to overheat because of the system's transparency effects. These visual effects don't seem to be well optimized for Intel CPUs.
Performance itself isn't actually bad, despite what a lot of people are saying. The real problem is that the extra heat makes the fans ramp up to maximum speed, which can be annoying and, in some cases, a bit concerning.
To fix this, I recommend using the following apps:
1. Turbo Boost Switcher (preferably the Pro version)
This app disables Intel Turbo Boost, a feature that automatically increases your CPU's clock speed above its base frequency whenever the system needs extra performance. While it's useful for demanding tasks, it also generates a lot more heat, which is one of the reasons Intel Macs tend to overheat on macOS Tahoe.
By disabling Turbo Boost, your Mac will run significantly cooler, and in most everyday tasks you probably won't notice much of a performance difference.
THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED RECOMMENDATION.
I recommend the Pro version because it's much more customizable. You can automatically enable or disable Turbo Boost based on conditions such as fan speed, battery level, or even the specific apps you're running, so you don't have to manage it manually all the time.
2. Macs Fan Control
This app gives you full control over your Mac's cooling system. Instead of relying entirely on Apple's default fan curve, you can create your own custom fan profiles.
You can either set a constant fan speed or have the fan speed automatically adjust based on the temperature of a specific internal sensor (such as the CPU, GPU, or CPU Proximity sensor). This lets the fans spin up earlier, preventing the Mac from reaching the high temperatures that normally trigger maximum fan speed.
For Intel Macs running macOS Tahoe, I recommend creating a custom profile that starts increasing the fan speed before the CPU gets too hot. This keeps temperatures under control and reduces thermal throttling without waiting for the system to react.
Combined with Turbo Boost Switcher, this can make a huge difference. Your Mac will generally run cooler, the fans will behave more predictably, and you'll avoid the constant overheating that many Intel Mac users are experiencing on Tahoe.
