International Schools Review

For quite a few years I was a member of this website. However I have not rejoined for a couple of reasons.

  1. Value for money: The website looks awful and is clunky. I am not at all sure that is worth the money at all and cannot see why it is relatively expensive

  2. Overwhelmingly negative reviews: I get it, we are teachers and we like to maon but by golly there are a great majority of moany reviews as opposed to good ones.

What do others think? Is it value for money? Do you find it useful? How many people on the thread are actually members now and if not why?

Cheers,

Having an interest in Harrow International School Bangkok my interest was piqued to read in yesterdays Times of London an article about a new flagship in the Harrowfication of the world, Harrow New York. Apparently it has a good many fewer students than teachers and has reduced its fees by 15000 dollars a year at a time when a lot of the more well known East Coast schools are raising theirs. Intrigued I had a look at their website and found that under Senior Management Team the first name on the list is their Marketing and Communications Director whose main claim to fame would appear to be that he is famous in his own world for "co-hosting a nationally aired infomercial alongside a Disney Channel chef". Indeed one has to scroll down quite a long way before the first educator is even announced. I would suggest that part of the reason for their lack of success thus far is not to have the Head, the Deputy Head(s) and the Head of Boarding at the top of this list.

( Harrow Bangkok and Harrow New York are not run by the same company, they just pay dues to HA1)

A couple of "why's" really.

Firstly why would a couple want to do this in full view of the public but secondly:

Why do the Thai media make such a song and dance about things like this?

This happened in Patong, a place renowned for sleazy bars and ladies of the night. Then there is Pattaya a town whose very existence is owed completely to the sex trade from US servicemen coming there for R and R from Vietnam and then, last but by no means least there is Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy, to name but two in Bangkok where the sex trade could not really be any more in the tourists face.

Hello there, my school is being wooed by one of the larger Educational groups which owns/runs over 100 schools. Reading various reports it is interesting to see such diverse opinions so I thought it may be good to ask those at the chalk face, what are your experiences when working within one of these groups either good or bad? What are the upsides? In may years of international education this will be my first time under an umbrella group.
