My First 40% Keyboard – MMD KM40 Review
I’m still relatively new to keyboards, so please excuse me if this post is inappropriate in any way, but I’m genuinely very happy with my KM40. It’s my first 40% keyboard, and I was really curious to see how such a small layout would perform both in everyday use and for gaming.
The keyboard comes in an ANSI layout, while I’m normally used to a German ISO-DE layout. After doing some research, I still decided to buy it and adapt the layout using the keyboard-specific VIA software, while also finding matching keycaps. Fortunately, I managed to do both successfully.
From my perspective, the keyboard feels extremely solid. The aluminum frame leaves a very high-quality impression, and the coating also seems to be of great quality. The installed switches (I suspect they are MMD Princess Ultra Thock switches) are simply a dream for me. The typing feel and the sound are absolutely fantastic, and I honestly can’t get enough of them.
It’s also very well suited for gaming once you get used to a few dual-function keys and train your muscle memory a bit.
For keycaps, I bought and installed the MK Clear Transparent ABS Cherry Profile Keycap Set in Smokey.
I do have two small criticisms as well. The switches used to toggle between cable/Bluetooth/2.4GHz mode and Mac/Windows mode feel a bit wobbly and don’t give the most premium impression. Also, the keyboard-specific VIA software is not quite as feature-rich as the standard VIA website version.
Overall though, I can say that I really like this keyboard and currently even prefer it over my Neo65 Sonic HE+.
