Colostomy/BP after SCI
Good morning all! My husband (45M) sustained an SCI in 2023 (T12 complete); since then we’ve been working diligently on his bowel program. First, we opted for digital stimulation and manual evacuation. Eventually, about a year and a half ago, we moved on to the Coloplast system which is what we are currently using. Coloplast has significantly improved the overall bowel program and has reduced “accidents”. He isn’t able to perform his own bowel program because his shoulders were significantly injured in his motorcycle accident, so I perform his BP for him. While I’m thankful for the improvements with the Coloplast, I’ve been wondering silently about a colostomy over the last couple of years. I believe it would allow him greater independence and allow us to travel more, which is something that we are very much interested in.
My question is: has anyone regretted their choice to move to a colostomy?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts/feedback/notes that you might have to share with us!
