Canon R5 EVF Issue with backlit ambient and strobe

Recently shot a job that had a subject indoors against a bright day lit landscape - think a living room with large sliding doors creating a indoor / outdoor room. Lighting was a mix of ambient + continuous from outside, a creamsource bounced inside for general fill, and strobe for the subject.

The issue was that in the EVF the subject is completely silhouetted because it's metering for the bright daylight. We tried disabling the exposure preview setting and maxing brightness for the EVF. Also switched to spot metering and AF (face tracking was also missing focus) thinking it would meter for the subject..we didn't have time to mess around too much but nothing helped.

Is this just a limitation of EVF in general or canon specifically? Or is there some other setting we missed? The whole thing was pretty ridiculous shooting handheld and the subject is 100% silhouetted to the point of no facial features, having no idea where she's looking etc..

Obviously it was extremely backlit but I don't think it would have been such an issue with an optical viewfinder.

thanks
