Portugal vs. Italy for a Culinary Vacation: Which One Would You Choose?

Portugal vs. Italy for a Culinary Vacation: Which One Would You Choose?

When people think about a food-focused trip in Europe, Italy is usually the first country that comes to mind. But Portugal is an underrated destination for a culinary vacation.

Portugal offers much more than pastel de nata:

  • Fresh Atlantic seafood and fish
  • Traditional meat dishes
  • Portuguese cheeses
  • Regional wines, including Vinho Verde and Douro wines
  • Local markets and small producers
  • Traditional cooking experiences
  • Conventual sweets and regional specialties

One thing I particularly like about Portugal is that you can combine food and wine with very different landscapes, historic cities, countryside, vineyards and the Atlantic coast.

I recently wrote a more detailed comparison of Portugal and Italy from a culinary travel perspective:

For people who have travelled to both countries: which one would you choose for a food and wine vacation, and why?
