The "Tattlers are all going to be exposed and lose their jobs!" fantasy
A lot of influencers and other critics of Tattle claim that many posters work in respectable, professional jobs, often in high positions and/or involving some form of care or responsibility for others: e.g. nurses, teachers, social workers, charity bosses, respected trustees, academics, and so on. Here are some examples off the top of my head:
- The person u/Red_Blooded_Male_123 posted about yesterday, who claimed that someone on the TiffanyThinks thread had a very important job and would be ruined professionally if anyone found out what she'd said on Tattle. They suggested that if the identities of people on Tattle were made public, there'd be prestigious public institutions having to issue apologies and distance themselves from the founder.
- Jess Taylor claiming that most Tattlers work in sectors like charities, academia, nursing, social work, or VAWG (Violence Against Women and Girls)
- Sali Hughes - "there are teachers of children among them!"
- There were all kinds of sock accounts on the old sub saying there were respected people in the public eye who were going to be "exposed" as Tattlers. One of them claimed that a regular poster on some or other thread was a well known figure in the publishing industry and would be exposed, tick tock!
This doesn't make a lot of sense. If you're in a demanding professional job you probably don't have time to be on Tattle all day. Nurses, carers, and social workers are often shift workers which means they're not posting around the clock except when they all go to pick up their kids from school at 3pm (as Jess Taylor would have us believe.) There just aren't that many people in important positions, and most of those are probably not on Tattle. A lot of the regular posters on threads for low-level TikTokers or reality stars seem to be working class, and often say that they're SAHMs or don't make much money which is why they're angry at influencers getting so much free stuff.
That's aside from the matter that (at least in the UK) it's often difficult to legally justify sacking someone for expressing opinions on the internet - even offensive ones. Unless what they said is illegal, concerns the company or a client, or was posted from company IT then there probably isn't much the employer can do, as numerous tribunals have found. There might be cases where someone having posted on Tattle could damage their reputation. Again going back to the post yesterday, TiffanyThinks is an influencer with terminal cancer so if someone works in the NHS or for a cancer charity or something, yes it could harm their career if they were found to have made abusive comments about her online. Otherwise? Most people probably don't care. Much of what is on Tattle is all so petty anyway. I'm not going to faint in horror if my dentist is posting online that Lauryn Goodman is a liar and PTWM is a shit parent or something. My sister doesn't give a toss whether her children's teacher has called an influencer fat on the internet, etc.
TL;DR it's all bullshit but you'd think at some point these people would wise up, and let go of the fantasy that they're going to get tens of thousands of people fired and publicly shamed by "unmasking" them as posting on Tattle
