Results of the 2025 Australian election if Australia used a proportionate voting system
The Gallagher index for the 2025 Australian federal election was 28.43, extremely high for international standards. Some examples of the disproportionate result include that:
- Labor received 34.56% of the vote but 62.67% of the seats.
- The Greens received 12.20% of the vote but only 0.67% of the seats, the same share of seats than Katter's Australian and Centre Alliance, who recieved 0.33% and 0.24% of the vote respectively.
- Several minor parties received meaningful vote shares but no seats at all.
So, what would the result look like the the Gallagher index were 0?
Labor - 52
Coalition - 48
Greens - 18
One Nation - 10
Trumpet of Patriots - 3
Family First - 3
Legalise Cannabis - 2
Libertarian - 1
People First - 1
Katter's Australian - 1
Independents - 11
Very diverse parliament here which is great for transparency and mediation.
A realistic majority can be formed for the left by:
Labor + Greens + Legalise Cannabis + at least 4 independents = 76
or for the right by:
Coalition + One Nation + Trumpet of Patriots + Family First + People First + Katter's Australian + at least 10 independents = 76
It is more realistic for the left to govern in this as the majority of independent votes come from teals, and I cannot see them working with the likes of One Nation and Family First.
