Can anyone make the case for doing a PhD in Australia?

Having worked in industry for a few years, I've come to the conclusion that I want to pursue a PhD in science/engineering. I'm currently exploring my options and I really want to pursue one since it is the next logical step for the job I want.

I saw a post yesterday asking, "Why aren't there more Aussies doing PhDs?" And I want to know if there is anything I could look forward to.

So...can anyone make the case for doing a PhD? What are the benefits, and why might it be a good decision?

I'd be interested in hearing from people who have completed a PhD or are currently doing one. Looking back, was it worth it, and why?

Thanks!
