Nvidia Driver Fails, Fedora 44 Falls Back to Nouveau
Hi everyone - I'm using an old Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 graphics card and have been trying to switch from Ubuntu 24.04 X11 to Fedora 44 GNOME Wayland. The Nvidia driver appears to install, but fails on boot and the system falls back to the Nouveau driver. I've tried reinstalling and booting into the 6.19 kernel with no luck.
I don't game, but use the system for work-related tasks that can include occasional video editing and other demanding software (CAD, vector programs, very large spreadsheets).
Can you tell me if the Nouveau driver is suitable for the GTX 950? If it is, I won't bother with the proprietary driver. However, if there's likely to be performance issues, any tips on how I can get the Nvidia driver to work?
Originally, I had tried Fedora KDE, but the experience was terrible with regular program crashes and Google Chrome couldn't run with graphics acceleration. So far, Fedora GNOME appears to be working well, but I won’t know for sure until I dedicate some time to test a work task.
If necessary, I’m happy to swtich to Linux Mint X11 until I bring myself to buy an AMD card (although I’d prefer not to waste a functional Nvidia card). I wanted to feel a bit flashy using Fedora rather than Linux Mint.
Thanks for your help.
SOLVED: With thanks to u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 - My GPU is too old for the default Nvidia driver that I had installed. An older version must be used as detailed here: https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA
ADDITIONAL UPDATE: While I was able to install a suitable Nvidia driver and this improved general performance, I'm unable to play video from file despite installing RPM Fusion codecs. I've decided to switch to Linux Mint for this machine. To be clear, I blame proprietary stonewalls for this mess. In general, I love the FOSS philosophy.
