Trouble with skin color matching

I’m medium-tan, hyperpigmented, and genuinely feel like I have 10 different shades on my face 😭. I have both blue and green veins, and my undertone seems warm-neutral but can also lean cool/olive depending on the lighting. Finding foundation has been a nightmare.

What confuses me is this: I recently tried a foundation that was technically too dark for me — probably around 4–5 shades deeper than my actual skin tone — and somehow it blended into my face SO much better than foundations that are supposedly my “perfect match.” (Giorgio Armani luminous silk in case anyone is wondering)

The lighter “correct” shades often:
make my hyperpigmentation look gray or more obvious,
look chalky or flat, or just sit weirdly on my skin.
But the slightly deeper shades somehow make my skin look more cohesive and natural after blending, albeit darker!

I’m especially curious if other South Asian / medium tan / hyperpigmented people experience this too. I feel like I’m losing my mind shade matching 😅
