When we moved into our house a few years ago there was a marshy area in the woods behind the house. My husband has been digging it out to make it more of a pond. It’s now about 5’x12’ and at the absolute deepest maybe 1.5-2 feet deep in the center, it has a ledge around the inside edge that’s probably one foot deep. We have a four and two year old. The two year old fell in today (husband was there) and she climbed out herself. I think we need a fence, my husband thinks it’s fine. I keep telling them not to go into the woods without a grown up and they haven’t tried.
