Question Rhythms & Inputs

I’m late to the party and just found out about this game after coming across a YT video showing the MJ mod. This looks rad!

Can someone tell me more about how “complex” and “free” you can be with your rhythmic inputs when playing this game? Can you stray from the standard 4/4 downbeat and add variance by switching between 8ths and 16ths, skipping downbeats + only hitting upbeats, and even doing triplet rhythms? Does the game prescribe a specific rhythm you need to hit, or can you do your own thing —as if you were drumming along to the song yourself—as long as it’s on rhythm?

I assume that complexity would be *so* difficult (maybe impossible?) to program, but it’s how I’d want to play. I’ve tried to figure it out myself by watching more gameplay. I notice the character will do combos that hit interesting rhythms, but I’ve not been able to see the controller inputs that trigger the combos.

For context I played a bit of that Hi-Fi guitar boy game with a friend; I thought it was a great concept with stunning art design, but the input rhythms were more limited than what I would want. I only played it for a bit, though, so maybe later levels became more complex.

Thanks!
