Tax returns

While applying for a partner visa as a defacto (living together for years, not registered with a government body), how important is it that we had been declaring each other as “spouse” in our tax return in all the years prior?

We haven’t been doing this because the tax returns ask for “spouse” and we are not.

Were your visas granted if you had not done this in tax before and after application?

Should we make this change in our tax returns going forward (from a visa perspective)?

Do they cross check tax returns while processing the visa? We provided bank details and lots of other evidence for the financial pillar; but nothing related to taxes.

it’s only yesterday that we found out that “spouse“ includes defacto for tax purposes.

Police check

Hi everyone,

I have 2 questions regarding police checks for partner visa (820, 801).

I lived in a country for over a year, from September 2015 to October 2016 (over 12 months in all and kind of in the last 10 years). I have a police check from this country from around September 2015. I have not been to this country since I left in 2016.

  1. I plan to submit my partner visa application by next month. Given that the stay in that country was over 12 months but would fall outside the 10-year mark in 5 months, should I apply for another police check?
  2. I plan to submit the police checks I have from Australia and the other country now, and to apply for a new one in a couple of months after submitting the application. Is that a sensible thing to do?

Thanks for your help!
