I was today years old when I figured this out. I’m 63 years old and have been watching “I Love Lucy” just as long.
It has always bothered me that between “Lucy Visits Graumans” and “Ricky sells the car” the location of the Mertzes hotel room door switched from the left of the screen to the right of the screen.
I’m watching “Ricky Sells the Car” now, and it just hit me. The Mertzes are in a different room because they checked out when Fred bought the motorcycle and they were leaving to head back to New York.
But now I have a new thing to annoy me. The Mertzes checked out and in 5 minutes, give or take, they decide to stay when Ricky agrees to buy their train tickets. Why couldn’t they just get their own room back? It’s not like they can book a room to someone else the minute the guests in that room check out. Also, who paid for the room when they checked out? It’s not like a hotel lets you check out and then sends a bill later. Maybe that’s how it worked back then?
But normally you have to pay upon checkout, and I always thought Ricky was paying for the Mertzes room. Fred had a seizure upon losing the money for the motorcycle. I can’t see him forking over the cash for a 3 month Hollywood hotel stay. They would have requested Ricky to pay the Mertzes bill upon their checkout and the Ricardos would have known the Mertzes were leaving.
Fred is such a skinflint I can’t see him agreeing to a trip to Hollywood if he had to pay for his lodging. Heck, he declined to go when Ricky asked him to share the gas expenses.
Edit: Yes, it is a different room. The original room the Mertzes were in was 317. In “Ricky sells the car” when Lucy runs out of the room after being caught tangled up with Fred, we see the room number is 372.
