Hard water damage

I wanted to post this because I struggled with what I thought was permanent hair damage for years before realizing hard water was a huge part of the problem.

Living in an area in Canada where the water in my home has a lot of minerals, my hair became extremely dry, rough and dull, impossible to detangle and constantly knotting. I stopped wearing my hair down or even in a ponytail as it would get impossible to detangle. And it honestly felt like no products worked anymore. I genuinely thought my hair was ruined forever.

I tried the Malibu hard water sachets because so many people recommended them, but personally they made my hair feel even drier and almost impossible to detangle afterward. I know they work for some people, but for me they were way too harsh on already damaged hair.

What actually helped me over time was installing a shower filter, consistently using the K18 detox shampoo, applying the K18 leave-in repair mask afterwards, and alternating with very hydrating shampoos/conditioners in between.

The K18 products were expensive (probably around $200 total for everything over time), but I used them consistently for months instead of expecting instant results.

My first week I used the leave-in mask about 3-4 days. Then switched to once weekly while focusing heavily on hydration in between washes.

The biggest signs of improvement:
- I can wear my hair in a ponytail again while playing sports without it turning into a tangled mess
- my hair texture feels significantly softer
- I can actually wear my hair down again comfortably
- detangling is way easier now

I just wanted to post this in case someone else feels hopeless about hard water damage. I truly thought my hair was permanently ruined, and while it’s still a work in progress, it has improved so much with consistency and reducing mineral exposure.

Hopefully this helps someone else not give up ❤️
