Need a root canal- but on which tooth?

Need a root canal- but on which tooth?

27F, went in for routine cleaning and radiographs at the end of April, had a leaky filling on #30 but no pain whatsoever. Dentist did a crown and I was in significant pain 2 days after the temporary crown, radiating through my bottom jaw, TMJ, ear and up to my top jaw. Got the permanent crown put on a few days later and still in pain that wakes me up in the middle of the night. Pain is variable; sometimes I can go a full day without pain meds and others OTC pain meds don’t make it go away.

Went to endodontist yesterday to get evaluated for a root canal. I have no pain on percussion or bite tests, but the cold test is awful. But here’s the kicker: I’m way more sensitive to the cold test on #31, and onmy somewhat sensitive on #30. I have a filling that was done ~10 years ago on the distal aspect of #31, but endodontist says both the crown and that older filling look beautiful.

Going back tomorrow to redo the cold test. The last thing I want is to do a root canal on the wrong tooth and still be in pain. My question is: why would getting a crown put in on #30 suddenly make #31 so painful, especially when everything looks fine radiographically?? I also had a baby 4 months ago and am currently breastfeeding, could this have anything to do with this? Any tips on how to ensure this is done on the correct tooth?

Extremely frustrated to be spending so much money and be in so much pain when I had no pain at all when all this dental work began.
