AITA for Possibly Impounding a Friend's Car Parked in my driveway?
Hello! Long-time fan of Charlotte here, never thought I'd have a reason to post but am currently battling with myself over a potentially friendship-ending decision. Let me provide some context (all names fake):
I, 34 f, met my friend Angie, 31 f, about 3.5 years ago at work. We clicked pretty quickly and developed a bond that grew outside of the office. As time went on I did start to notice that she has a tendency toward more drama than I usually prefer, but I brushed it aside as normal personality differences that just happen. However, about a year before this story begins we had a bit of a blow up when I tried to put some boundaries in place. She was having a difficult time with her mental health and honestly, so was I. However, my need for a little space to take care of myself triggered a lot of emotion in her and it was a rocky couple of weeks. We made up and both apologized for our parts in the situation, but I did not forget her reaction to my boundaries and maintained a slight distance there for my own well-being. Fast forward a couple months and she met her new boyfriend, a couple months later was pregnant (intentionally, I know, I had opinions on that too), and a few months after that she went on an extended maternity leave due to complications with the pregnancy. She was no longer coming to the office so naturally I wasn't seeing her as much. We started to drift more at this point, which could be a whole other story, but eventually she did have the baby. Unfortunately, it was a traumatic birth with a lot of complications and baby was born early, but healthy thankfully. After this she decided that she was not returning to work (again, not the choice I would have made but to each their own). This brings us up to this story.
In January of this year, Angie and her now fiance are struggling financially and have decided rather abruptly to move in with her parents. This involves leaving the state we live in. Her car, which isn't in the greatest shape, is not actively inspected and registered anymore due to fines so she does not want to risk driving it across states. Instead, she asked if she could temporarily park the car in my driveway until she starts her new job, can pay the fees, and drive the car back with her. I'm told no later than April because she is meant to start her new job in March. I reluctantly agree with the understanding it would be gone by the end of April.
Well. Everyone warned me not to agree and I should have listened. April came and went and no updates on this car. I come to find out she has decided not to take the job and to continue as a stay at home mom, which means it will take longer to figure out the car piece... I continue to receive no updates on this car. Around July I ask her what her plan is because it has been 6 months now and the car is still in my driveway. She has no plan. I tell her I need the car gone by the time my leasing company comes to do lease renewal inspections because I do not want any fines for having an unregistered car with no plates sitting in my driveway. She asks when this will be and I let her know I don't have an exact date yet, but it is usually end of August, beginning of September.
It is now August. The car is still there and it's dead now. She gave me a half-assed plan for her in-laws to have someone come tow it to their place so I don't have to worry about it, but of course nothing has happened. I still don't have a lease renewal inspection date, but I'm now thinking that as soon as I get it she will have until the day before to get the car out of my driveway or I am going to have it impounded. I don't feel I have much of a choice anymore, but I know that this will probably end this friendship. I've gone back and forth about this and other aspects of our friendship over the past year or so and while I think I'm well within my rights, I want to make sure I'm not going too far and making a decision out of pure emotion and irritation.
Oh - and to add salt to the wound - the car is full of stuff, including the baby blanket I spent hours crocheting for her to give to her at the baby shower. So that's fun to see everyday.
So, would I be the asshole if I have her car impounded knowing full well she likely can't afford to get it out?
