Interior Designer considering switching to UI/UX — is this a realistic career move in 2026?

Hi everyone, I have a degree in Interior Design and a three years of experience in the field. I’ve been thinking seriously about switching careers to UI/UX/Product Design.

I’m currently considering starting UI/UX from scratch and building a portfolio before applying for jobs. My main concern is whether companies are actually willing to hire someone coming from an interior-design background, especially in the current job market.

I’d really appreciate advice from people who have either:

* switched from interior/architecture/design into UI/UX,

* made a career switch into UX from another design field, or

* hired/mentored junior UX designers.

A few things I’d particularly like to know:

  1. Is my interior-design background an advantage in UX, or does it make very little difference?

  2. How difficult is it realistically to get the first UI/UX job without a traditional UX degree?

  3. What skills should I focus on to become employable rather than just completing a course?

  4. How long did it take you to become job-ready?

  5. If you made a similar transition, do you feel it was worth it?

I’m looking for honest experiences, including reasons not to make the switch if you think it’s a bad idea.

Thanks!
