I have been dealing with a problem that has been bothering me for about two months. For some reason, I went to a psychiatric clinic and was prescribed 20 mg of citalopram. About 16 days after starting the medication, I began experiencing sudden inhalations while I was between sleep and wakefulness.

Sometimes it is just a single deep breath, and sometimes, right as I start dreaming, a single hiccup-like movement suddenly wakes me up. This makes it very difficult for me to fall asleep.

I immediately stopped taking the medication and have never taken it again. However, even though it has been about 1.5–2 months since I stopped taking it, these jerks/sudden inhalations have not gone away.

I went to a neurologist and underwent all the necessary tests, but everything came back normal.

My question is: Has anyone else experienced this or something similar? If so, is this condition usually permanent or temporary? Please share your experiences and help me if you can.
