WIBTA if i take my neighbors cat

hello, i’m not on reddit much but i figured this would be a good way to get honest opinions from people.

my (19m) neighbors has a cat (m), a cute black cat, but he’s always outside all the time. through the cold winter through the tornado season. last years summer of 2025, we had a horrible storm. it was a microburst, it rooted up trees, took down power lines, and we even had golf ball sized hail. and a few minutes after that storm, i got outside and i saw the poor wet cat (that was thankfully not hurt), outside. imagine how scared he was or how easily he could’ve gotten hurt.

well recently, i notice a big wound on his back and they don’t seem to care about him. so i was thinking maybe, especially for huge storms, i could take him in and give him shelter and food. and maybe eventually he’ll become my cat?

here’s some backstory on the neighbors, they always get cats, even small kittens. they treat them like toys and keep them outside where prey like foxes and coyotes can get them. one time they got a kitten, and it disappeared. so they keep on getting more cats. now this cat i’m talking about in this story is a quite special cat. he does silly normal cat things, like climb up trees or go on roofs obviously because cats like to climb. every time he does a perfectly normal cat thing, when i run into the neighbors they keep on saying how much they hate the cat. and it seems like they aren’t joking considering they don’t pay attention to him at all.

this really bothers me because i’m a huge animal lover, i love all types of animals. i even have 4 rats, 2 turtles, and 1 jumping spider. and seeing a neglected cat that deserves a loving home, really irritates me.

i dont want to hear any of the normal redditer therapy bullshit i hear on reddit stories lmao, i just want to hear if im the asshole and what should i do?
