Gen1 Fusion and MKZ hybrid operation, am I doing it wrong?

I'm new to hybrid cars and have been actively shopping for a first generation fusion or MKZ hybrid. I have test driven three cars and am starting to wonder about my expectations. My google-fu has lead me to believe the traction battery alone should get the car going and carry low speeds (up to 45ish mph) while in traffic. While I know the battery is limited and will need to charge, none of the cars I have test driven will accelerate from a stop on battery alone. The ICE kicks on immediately when applying throttle. The acceleration is only the pace of shuffling traffic. I'm trying to move the car quickly, just normally.

I did some OBDII testing on a car this week and logged some data that meets my understanding of how the battery should behave. I also understand the PCM and BMS maybe limiting the traction battery usage based on the battery's age. There is a TSB for this. But those are another story... Right now I'm just trying to make sure I am expecting the right behavior from the car.

This is cross posted from the regular Fusion forum based on reddits recommendation.
