Regional SA teaching placement without a car where would you recommend?

Hi everyone! I’m a final-year international Master of Teaching (Secondary) student in Adelaide and I’m considering doing my final teaching placement in a regional/country area of South Australia next year.

The areas I’m currently considering are Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Mount Gambier, Limestone Coast, Yorke Peninsula and Eyre Peninsula.
I don’t drive or have access to a car, so I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who lives, works, studies or has completed a teaching placement in any of these areas.

I’m particularly interested in:

  1. how easy it is to find short-term accommodation for 8 weeks, and roughly how much rent might be?
  2. whether it’s realistic to live there without a car
  3. public transport within the town/region

3)whether schools, supermarkets, pharmacies and other basic shops are within walking distance in certain towns

4)what the social/community life is like, particularly for someone moving there temporarily and on their own

  1. whether locals are generally welcoming to newcomers

  2. any towns you would particularly recommend (or avoid) for someone in my situation

I’m also open to suggestions for other regional/rural areas of South Australia that may be suitable for a preservice teacher without a car, particularly around towns where short accomodation is reasonably available and the school, supermarket, chemist and other essential are within walking distance or accessible by reliable public transport.

I’d also love to hear from any teachers or preservice teachers who have done a regional placement, especially regarding accommodation and getting around without a car.

Thank you! Any firsthand experiences would be really helpful

Master of Teaching, first placement — advice on choosing between Y8 Earth Science and Y10 Physics (out-of-area subject)

Hii everyone!
I’m a Master of Teaching (Secondary) student about to start my first placement. I don’t have a science background, and I’ve been given the option to focus on either:
**Year 8 Earth and Space Science**
or
**Year 10 Newtonian Physics**
I was wondering if anyone has taught either of these topics before, especially during placement or as an out-of-area subject.
I’d love to hear:
How did you find explaining the content to students?

Were there any tricky questions or concepts that caught you off guard?

How manageable was the preparation?

Any tips for managing Year 8/Year 10 behaviour, if you taught that level?

I’m trying to choose the option that would be the most manageable and appropriate for a first placement.
I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have taught these topics or been through a similar placement structure.
Thank you!

Working Part-Time During Teaching Placement. Is It Manageable?

Hi everyone,
I've recently been allocated my secondary teaching placement and was hoping to continue my part-time job alongside placement, so I was wondering:

• What are the typical staff start and finish times?
• What time are placement students generally expected to arrive and leave?
• Are there usually staff meetings, duties, or other activities that require staying back after school?
• Did anyone work part-time while completing their placement? Was it manageable, and did you find you had enough time after school for work commitments?

As this will be my first professional experience placement, I'd also love to hear any advice, tips, or things you wish you'd known before starting placement.

Thanks!
