PhD in Remote Sensing & GIS (Europe) – How hard is it to transition to NASA/US?
Hi everyone,
I recently finished my PhD in Remote Sensing and GIS here in Europe. Like most of you, I heavily rely on NASA data and technologies (Landsat, MODIS, Earthdata, etc.) for my research.
My long-term goal is to transition into a research or postdoc role at NASA (or affiliated institutes like JPL). Since I am coming from outside the US, I’d love to get some realistic insights from this community:
- How difficult is it for a European citizen to get a research position there? I know defense/security roles require US citizenship, but how strict is it for civil Earth Science research?
- What fellowships should I look into besides the NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP)?
- How is a European PhD generally perceived in the US space/geospatial sector?
If you have made a similar move or work in the US system, I would highly appreciate your advice, visa tips, or experiences.
Thanks!
