1981 FIAT 124 spider

19-year-old starting my first project car — 1981 Fiat 124 Spider restoration
Hey everyone! I recently picked up a 1981 Fiat 124 Spider, and I’m planning on making this my first real project car.
My long-term plan is to completely strip the car down, repaint it, clean and restore every nook and cranny, and then put everything back together properly. While it’s apart, I want to replace anything that needs replacing rather than putting worn-out parts back on the car just because they technically still work.
I’m not trying to build something quickly or half-ass it. this is my first project car, so I know there’s going to be a LOT I don’t know. I’m planning to take my time, learn as I go, and whenever I have the time to work on it, I want to give it 100% of my attention.
One of the things I’m trying to figure out early is the engine situation.
I’d really like to increase the horsepower significantly, but I don’t want to get into a swap that requires extensive fabrication or completely redesigning the car. I’m particularly interested in engine swaps that are relatively well-known in the 124 Spider community and can be done with minimal/no fabrication, preferably using existing mounts or readily available swap components.
A few questions I’d love some advice on:
What engine swaps would you recommend for an ‘81 Spider that don’t require major fabrication?
What swaps give a significant horsepower increase while keeping the car reasonably reliable?
Are there particular engines that have good aftermarket/support for these cars?
Would it make more sense to build the original engine instead of swapping it?
What transmission/drivetrain upgrades would I need to consider with a higher-horsepower engine?
Are there any swaps you would specifically avoid?
What should I replace or upgrade while the car is completely disassembled?
Are there any common problem areas on these cars that I should pay special attention to during the restoration?
What mistakes do people commonly make when restoring their first 124 Spider?
I’m not looking to build a race car. I’d like to end up with something that is clean, reliable, fun to drive, and substantially more powerful than stock, while still feeling like a proper 124 Spider.
I’m completely open to advice, criticism, and recommendations from people who have actually worked on these cars. If you were starting with an ’81 Spider at 19 years old and had the opportunity to strip it down and build it back properly, what would you do differently from the beginning?
Thanks in advance! I’m hoping to document the whole process and learn as much as I can along the way.
