[AEW Dynamite 8/19 Spoilers] Ospreay, HENARE, Akira vs DCF Results; anything else NJPW relevant

Will Ospreay, Francesco Akira, HENARE def Brian Cage, Rocky Romero, Lance Archer — Hidden Blade

  • Ospreay made his full entrance alone, then HENARE and Akira inexplicably came out to Callum Newman’s theme.

  • Commentary did briefly talk about the Ospreay and Callum dissension.

  • Decent match, Akira was in for a lot of it but that’s because they spent the commercial break doing a “poor little white boy” heat segment on him. Akira and HENARE worked well with Ospreay, no hints of issues.

  • UE all did the hand sign and hugged to celebrate their win. Before he left, Ospreay made a telephone hand sign and said something into the camera but we couldn’t hear it over the music and commentary.

In a later pretaped sit down segment between Ospreay and Kenny, they spoke a lot about their careers in NJPW and the comparisons between them. Was a good segment and I’ll link it when it’s available somewhere.

Interesting call out post-G1 Finals

In his Backstage Comments after he and Drilla beat Gabe and Wheeler Yuta, Shingo says his bad G1 was the fault of his loss to Claudio Castagnoli in a tag match (War Dragons vs Claudio and PAC) on the post-Forbidden Door Collision and calls out Claudio to come fight him at Destruction in Kobe.

Claudio’s last match on a purely NJPW show was a failed NEVER 6 challenge at Dominion 2023 alongside Mox and Shota Umino. His last high-profile NJPW match was a loss to Shota Umino at Wrestle Dynasty last year.

[AEW Collision Spoilers]

On Dynamite, Will Ospreay was challenged to a 3v3 match against the Don Callis Family next week. Will is no longer bros with the Death Riders or Kenny, so in a promo on Collision he said he’ll be calling his boys in Japan* to come be his partners. Will knows HENARE is okay with him, Akira is okay with him, but it’s his “little brother Callum” that’s he’s a little bit worried about. (I’m assuming he only mentioned those three guys because they’re the only ones who’ll be making the trip.)

This Collision was taped on Wednesday so Will is technically free to show up in Ryogoku tonight, but from how he was speaking I doubt he will.

But if you care about the UE/Ospreay story you may want to either watch Dynamite or keep an eye out for the results on Wednesday.

Update: At the end of Collision it was confirmed it’ll be Ospreay, HENARE, and Akira vs DCF’s Brian Cage, Lance Archer, and Rocky Romero.

Additional update: Callum QRTed the tweet Ospreay made about asking UE for help and told him “Jog on”, which if you don’t speak bruv means “fuck off.”

Jake Lee off shows due to a neck injury

This was not given its own announcement, but was noted as part of the Japanese preview for tonight’s card.

It’s confirmed as likely a legitimate injury by the fact that the English site’s preview was never changed from the original card; with Jake listed as being in the 3rd match of Yuto-Ice, Shingo, Ishimori, and Gedo vs GOK, Jake, JAY, and Zane Jay (that’s now a 3v3 with Gedo dropped from the UBC side).

Yota Tsuji interview with ToSpo – promoting G1 Chicago/his match with TAKESHITA, and responding to Tony Khan’s comments on the FD post-show

Here’s my translation of the Tokyo Sports article Tsuji did to promote the G1 Chicago date, where he also addresses Tony’s press conference comments. I did use a DeepL translation as a base to edit because I can’t be arsed to independently type it all out right now. Anything in brackets are things I added for context, but wanted to make clear weren’t part of the original article.

>New Japan Pro Wrestling’s IWGP Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji will give his "response" when he faces KONOSUKE TAKESHITA on the opening show of the midsummer festival "G1 Climax" (July 11, Chicago, USA). For Tsuji, who has repeatedly made provocative statements about NJPW’s relationship with AEW, this big match in the United States is a critical moment. In a way that suggests he enjoys the pressure, he also eagerly requested AEW President Tony Khan to attend the show.

>Tsuji, who is entering G1 as NJPW’s top Champion, aims to win his first G1 as a competitor in the A Block. "To be honest, when I saw we were in the same G1 Block, I assumed that I would be facing Takeshita in Chicago. I think American fans naturally want to see in person the battle between Takeshita, who mainly competes in AEW, and myself, the [top NJPW] Champion," Tsuji said with a cocky smile.

>In their most recent match, Tsuji beat TAKESHITA to win the IWGP Heavyweight title at the Tokyo Dome on January 4. "I have to keep in mind that in the time since, TAKESHITA has beaten Kazuchika Okada (on an AEW show), so he must be a different person from six months ago. Chicago is a New Japan show, but it feels like I’m going to be on TAKESHITA’s home turf. I've also made quite a few remarks about AEW recently, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what kind of reaction American fans will have to the match.”

>Among those comments was Tsuji suggesting a boycott of the joint NJPW and AEW show "Forbidden Door (FD)" (June 28, San Jose, USA), on the grounds of the past treatment of IWGP [Heavyweight] title matches at the show. In the wake of that not only was no IWGP Heavyweight title match scheduled for FD, Tsuji did not appear on the show at all. At the press conference after the tournament, President Khan, who received questions from the press, said, "I respect Yota Tsuji and the IWGP [Heavyweight] title, and I want him to come here again," which became a hot topic.

>In response Tsuji said, "Once again, I can see he’s a great person. [(In the interview where Tsuji brought up the boycott he also went out of his way to say that he likes Tony and Tony was nice to him when he made an FD appearance in the past, but that part didn’t get as much attention as the boycott comments.)] As I said before, I have a lot of respect for Tony Khan. I have my opinions on AEW, but what I think is the root of the problem is how New Japan has handled themselves in the diplomatic aspects of the partnership. I think if NJPW re-examines that, we can build a new [and improved] partnership," he explained, clarifying the true intentions [of his past comments]. Tsuji added, "If he can make the time, I would like Tony Khan to come to Chicago. This is NJPW, and I think this is our chance to show what the IWGP [Heavyweight title] is about, in the United States against an AEW champion. And if you want, [Tony,] I would love to play golf together afterwards," he said, sending an "invitation" to President Khan.

>In order to take responsibility for the controversial comments he’s repeatedly made, the battle with Takeshita, who currently holds the AEW International Championship, is a perfect stage for Tsuji to prove himself. "In that sense, I think the match will be a battle for prestige between AEW and NJPW. I want to show the fans in the United States what it truly means to be the IWGP [Heavyweight]* Champion.” Tsuji is ready to to show the world that he is proud to be the IWGP champion, and he has been ready for a long time. [This is a play off Tsuji’s current catchphrase being “Are you ready?”]

*Translator’s note: As you can see I have added the word “Heavyweight” to many instances where they said “IWGP Champion” or just “IWGP” (except the first, where they did give the title’s full name, and a few instances where it was undoubtable that they were talking about that specific title), since the word is very often omitted when speaking about the title in Japanese. However because of the comments made by Shota Umino after his IWGP Global title defense at FD, I wanted to say that there could very well be some storyline reasoning as to why Tsuji especially just uses the term “IWGP Champion” here.

Official NJPW poster made with A eye; misspells name of their reigning Heavyweight Champion

I had to spell phonetically in the title since using the phrase makes the post not allowed to be submitted because it thinks I used it to make the post lol.

Graphic under Callum (top right) misspells his name as “Cullum.” Bottom right of the trophy they also misspell “Sirent” instead of “Silent” as part of Jake Lee’s nickname.

[Minor AEW 5/20 Spoilers] A notable milestone upcoming for Katsuyori Shibata

Katsuyori Shibata’s match with Ospreay on Collision was his 99th match since Sakura Genesis 2017, the show where Shibata almost died as a result of (largely self-inflicted) injury during his IWGP Heavyweight challenge against Okada. His 100th match will move Sakura Genesis 2017 off the first page of his Cagematch match list.

There were nearly five years where it seemed like that would never happen. Five years where those of us who thought he could potentially make a miraculous comeback figured he’d work less than 10 matches a year, and where Shibata himself did interviews saying as much.

But above all else, The Wrestler is a pretty stubborn guy. With his signature extraordinary fighting spirit and the help of electroshock therapy usually used on racehorses, he made that miraculous comeback. Unfortunately that stubbornness seemingly cost him the opportunity to keep wrestling for NJPW; thankfully other opportunities arose and from all accounts he appears to be quite happy working for Tony.

It’s kind of a long shot but I’d love to see that 100th match be something fitting the occasion. At least a singles match against an opponent with some name value, instead of the more likely kind of throwaway Opps tag or spot in a multi-man match.
