


The Amazon, El Niño and a Climate Under Pressure
The latest warning about the Amazon is not just about one forest or one weather event. It shows how closely connected our climate, forests, oceans, food systems and human lives are.
Scientists expect a very strong El Niño to peak between October and December 2026, at a particularly difficult time for the Amazon. This is when rivers are already low and the forest is at its driest.
Why is this worrying?
- Extreme heat: Europe has experienced an exceptionally hot summer, while parts of Asia and the Middle East are also facing record temperatures.
- Wildfires: Severe fires are affecting Europe, Canada, Indonesia, the US and the Amazon.
- Floods: At the same time, parts of Asia are experiencing devastating floods and extreme rainfall.
- Warming oceans: Sea surface temperatures have reached record levels, putting marine ecosystems such as coral reefs under pressure.
- The Amazon is already weakened: Farming, mining, deforestation and climate change have degraded a large part of the rainforest.
- Water and food are at risk: A severe drought could reduce river levels, damage crops and pastures, affect livestock and create water shortages.
- Food insecurity: A weaker Amazon does not only affect Brazil. Changes in rainfall and climate can affect food production across South America and beyond.
The Amazon plays a huge role in the climate system. Its forests absorb carbon dioxide and release enormous amounts of moisture into the atmosphere. This moisture helps create the “flying rivers” that carry rain across South America. If the forest becomes weaker, this natural system also becomes weaker.
What makes the situation even more dangerous is that El Niño is a natural phenomenon, but it is now acting on top of human-caused global warming. A forest already weakened by deforestation and previous droughts becomes much more vulnerable to another extreme event.
The article compares this to a person who is already sick and then gets another infection. The Amazon is already under stress, and another severe drought could push many parts of the forest closer to a point from which recovery becomes very difficult.
But what is the solution,

We are constantly looking outside for more—more consumption, more comfort, more possessions and more experiences. This endless wanting drives us to produce and consume more, which means more extraction of resources and more emissions.
So the problem is not only about technology, policies or carbon emissions. We also need to look at the ego that keeps demanding more and more.
Until this inner restlessness is understood and addressed, we may keep trying to solve the consequences while continuing to create the cause. If our way of living does not change, we may keep pushing nature, and ultimately ourselves, towards destruction.
