Final Fantasy VIII Deserves a Remake

Final Fantasy VIII Deserves a Remake

It's no secret that Final Fantasy VIII is one of my favorite JRPG's on the PS1 and entries in the FF franchise. I still find myself looking back at fondly of my pre-school days when I would watch my brothers playing the game with it's incredible music orchestrated by the one and only Nobuo Uematsu-san accompanied with the most amazing CGI and FMV I had seen in a PS1 game. These feelings of nostalgia only amplified when I replayed the game for the tenth time back in 2019 when it was remastered for the PS4. Even now as I write this memoir, I find myself getting lost in time to Faye Wong's angelic voice singing the iconic ballad, 'Eyes On Me' played during Squall and Riona's romantic moment abord the Ragnarok. It didn't surprise me at all when I found out it was the first song in video game history to win an award at the 14th Annual Japan Gold Disc Awards.

Last month, I was taken off guard when I saw a video of the voice of Clive Rosfield from FFXVI himself, Ben Starr, with copy of FFVIII and talking about how much he loved the game. Many other fans soon joined in the comment section, expressing their desire to have Square give the game the FVII remake treatment. I can not express the level of joy it would give me to have FFVIII receive a full on remake trilogy just like FFVII, as I believe there is no reason why it shouldn't have a one. Perhaps maybe even a tetralogy since the original game came within 4 disc. I also would like to have more aspect be revisited/improved from the original game, such as the infamous leveling system for G-Forces, more background on the Sorceress War, further attention on the rivalry between Squall and Seifer.

Oh, and how can we forget about the ambiguity of Laguna's relationship to our protagonist. I like to hear more from you guys about the possibility of full out FF VIII remake. Do you want it to happen? What iconic moments from the game would you like to see be remade with today's technology? What gameplay features do you think need the most improvement? Also, which side characters would you like to see have more development.

The Hironobu Kageyama Era of Dragon Ball is Making a Comeback!

One of Japan's biggest anison singers, Hironobu Kageyama truly is the voice of Dragon Ball. I still can remember growing up watching DBZ with my brothers singing along to the infamous opening, 'Cha-La Head-Cha-La' and listing to mix-cd's of the various other songs he sang for the series. It was also a great joy to hear Kageyama-san rock sing the themes to various DBZ films and video games such as 'Ore wa Tokoton Tomaranai!!' from Budokai 3, 'Hikari no Sasu Mirai e!' from Infinite World, and one of my very favorites, 'Saikyō no Fusion' from Fusion Reborn. Kageyama's unmatched, high-octane power house vocals was the perfect match for DBZ's Super Saiyan action and it's epic displays of the Kamehameha.

Listing to him sing truly feels like you're soaring through the skies of DBZ. So when I heard the news that the Prince of the Anison World himself was returning to sing the song 'Zero' for the game, Sparking! Zero after 18 years, I nearly jumped out of my chair with excitement. Don't get me wrong, there have been plenty of new artist that given many songs I enjoy listing to from the DBZ series like with Takayoshi Tanimoto and Daichi Miura. However, I still find myself listening to Kageyama's powerful voice whenever I want to feel the true heart of Dragon Ball. Even the late Akira Toriyama himself loved his energy, despite paying little attention to anime adaptations.

The feeling was mutual for Hironobu Kageyama when he shared his thoughts on Toriyama's passing. "Singing the song 'Cha-La Head-Cha-La' for DBZ was the biggest medal of my life. The loss of the loss of the sun is too much to bear."

I talked about this years ago during my early universities studies with a classmate who was also a Fate fans. We talk for at least an hour about our favorite servants in the Grail Wars and how we could have seen more of their origins and life before entering the Throne of Heroes. Even now in my thirties, I still think about this conversation I had with my former classmate and wish we could see more of the servants' past lives. So I thought of how cool it would be to see a possible OVA or Films series of all the servants from each Fate title, such as Stay Night/Zero, Extra, Strange Fake, Grand Order and etc. I think it would something incredibly rewarding for both fans and Type Moon in itself.

As for the production aspects, I actually would love to see the studios who worked on the adaptions of the titles some of the servants are most prominent in, For instance, Ufotable covering the servants in Stay Night/Zero, A-1 with Strange Fake/Apocrypha, Shaft with Extra, and the various other studios that covered the PV's in Grand Order. I'd also would love to have the composers who created the music in the anime adaptations to bring back more of their magic to the history of the servants, such as Keita Haga, Yuki Kaijura, Hideyuki Fukasawa, and etc. Additionally of course, I'd like to see the seiyuu's return as their respective roles and lend their fantastic vocals, maybe even provide vocal tracks to their films, considering most of them are professional J-pop stars. With all that aside, I want to address the obstacle of coinciding storylines.

Yes many of the servants in the Fate franchise share much of their stories with each other. So how would the OVA's/films be able to show multiple stories without rehashing the same scenes or events over and over? Well, one of my favorite JRPG's, Odin Sphere, uses a non-linear multi-perspective narrative structure to tell the story of it's 5 playable characters. Each of the characters' story arcs are unique and perfectly overlap events within the game. I think this approach would work best.

With all that said, I'd like to hear some perspective of my fellow Fate fans. Do you think having OVA's/Films centered around the servant's past lives is a good idea? If so, which servants would you like to see most have their lore fully animated?
