Thinking about trying Linux for the first time. Any advice?

Hey everyone!

I've known about Linux for about a year now, but I've never actually used it. I recently got a new PC, and I'm thinking about dual-booting Linux alongside Windows.

I'm completely new to Linux, so I honestly don't know where to start or which distro to choose.

The main things that interest me are its customizability, open-source nature, and how useful it's supposed to be for programming. I've also heard that Linux can be great for CSE students, but I'm not sure how true that is.

I'd like to know a few things:

  • Which distro would you recommend for a complete beginner?
  • What are the actual benefits of using Linux over Windows?
  • Are there any major disadvantages, especially when it comes to gaming and everyday use?
  • Is learning Linux actually useful for programming or my future career?
  • Is dual-booting a good idea for someone who's just starting out?

I'm not planning to leave Windows anytime soon. I just want to explore Linux, learn something new, and see whether I'll enjoy using it.

I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Even basic tips would be helpful since I barely know anything about Linux right now.

Thanks in Advance!

EDIT: Thanks everyone for all the advices, its already late at night I will try to read everyone else's comment when I wake up in the morning.

Why are my teammates telling me not to use the Odin?

So I've been playing some comp matches recently trying to climb a bit (I'm Iron 3, so still pretty new to the game). I also play customs with friends who are Gold to Diamond, and I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with different guns.

Lately I've been enjoying the Odin. Something about the way it plays just clicks for me — it's a different style from the usual rifles and I find it satisfying to use.

The thing is, in my last few comp games I started buying it and both enemies and my own teammates told me to stop. One teammate even told the enemy team "don't worry, he won't spam it" as if to apologize for me. I was pretty confused — it's a gun that's available to everyone, I had the credits for it, so what's the problem?

Is there something about the Odin I'm missing, or is this just a community preference thing?
