Discussion: shared resource system vs attaching to individual creature cards

As the title says, what do you think about shared vs individual resource system?

In case you don't know what I mean: most TCGs have a shared resource system where all the cards on the field can use. Example:

In magic, all your creatures share land. In digimon all your creatures actions depend on shared memory.

On the other hand, in Pokemon you attach energy to each individual Pokemon to power it up.

I'm wondering why most TCGs chose the shared system, and if the individual system is annoying to players. Why? Because if your creature is knocked out, you discard the resource.

Thanks! Updated card design based on your feedback.

Hi guys. Thanks again for your feedback. I really do take all of it seriously and make improvements based on it.

In this iteration, I made the following changes based on this feedback:

  1. The cards don't look like they are part of the same game.
    • Took out unnecessary decorations to make a truly minimalist card to reflect the stripped-down philosophy of this easy-to-play family TCG.
  2. It doesn't look like a TCG.
    • That's fine. In fact, I pushed it even further to make it look like cards from a board game, so that it looks easy-to-play to my audience, who are not TCG fans but do like board games and casual card games like UNO.
  3. Diamond/resource doesn't need an icon.
    • Fair enough. I took it out and put the resource inside a crystal.
  4. The faction (blue Pisces sign) looks out of place.
    • I changed it. Now it's on the top right.
  5. Overall improvements
    • All the card layout UI is now BLUE. There will be yellow, green, and red as well, and so giving each color a cohesive theme will be easier for the player. They are familiar with this from playing UNO.
    • I also put the equipment type icon in the Bubble's description, so that when it peaks out from under the creature card, you can see what it is, in case the game allows you to have one of each: gear, weapon, and accessory.

What do you think? Any further feedback?

New minimalist card layout - (borderless)

Hi guys. Please let me know your thoughts on these cards. The info at the top is:

  • (♦2) : Energy cost
  • ♓️ : Pisces
  • ⬢3 : HP

The second card is an equipment card that can be placed under the creature cards. In this case, Bubble protects the creature.

*** I painted the fish Pokémon as a test to see what illustration style to use. I like this a lot! It is sustainable enough to paint 100 cards.

Questions:

  • What do you think of the illustrations? I am going for an easy-to-paint, almost kid book, flat, line-less cartoon style with realistic lighting. Think Breath of the Wild but painterly.
  • These designs are completely borderless!!! Am I crazy? Most TCGs I see are influenced by Magic: The Gathering, but I want to take a fresh approach and not be required to copy the standard set by previous TCG giants. This card game, by the way, will be a family game. Easy and quick, and NOT for fans of fantasy, or TCGs so I realize I don't have to make them look traditional.
  • The creature and equipment card layouts are different on purpose, so, at a glance, players can tell which is which. What do you think?
  • The Equipment (Bubble) card has an illustration thumbnail repeated at the bottom, so that when it peaks out from under the creature card, the palyer can still see what it is.
  • I took your guy's advice and put the energy cost (♦2) on the top left corner (rather than at the bottom) and I think it's great. I wanted it to look like a price tag. "This costs two diamonds"

Any other help / first impressions welcomed.

New layout to my astrology cards

Hi guys. Can you tell that this is a Blue Pisces, it need 3 crystals to play it, and has 8 HP?

What if the ocean was made by the crying fish?

Hi guys. I'm making an astrology TCG. Instead of the cards being creatures, they represent archetypes that the player embodies. In this case, an aspect of Pisces.. The Fish: Lonely and afraid, it swims in a sea of its own tears.

I would have to make about 100 cards, and if I'm going to make it happen, I need to keep the illustrations simple so that I can realistically finish all 100 of them.

Do you think? Any advice is welcome.

Hi guys, just showing you my process. I've never played a TCG where your characters and their attacks are separate cards, soo... I had to sketch out a few to try for myself.

I don't even know how this is going to work.

I believe there are a few digital card games where your cards are your attacks/ actions. Slay this spire, And the mobile game chaos Zero nightmare. In these games, You can recycle your discard pile. It'll be interesting to see how that plays in a real life. TCG!

hi guys. I am finalizing my card layout for my first printing and testing, and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

This is meant to be a "gateway" TCG, which introduces classic mechanics to newcomers (who have never played TCGs) by replacing the traditional fantasy/ anime theme for Astrology (what my friends are into.) Using the three stages of zodiac evolution as a progression system, players build compact 20-30 card decks and manage a small battlefield of only three hero slots. To keep the experience fun, I added galaxy-themed D12s for tracking HP and flat diamond tokens for mana.

The core gameplay: heroes cannot attack on their own. Instead, players must utilize Action Cards to trigger combat, each more powerful action requiring more mana (which is gained one per turn by the hero in the active position.)

I have two main questions for you:

  1. Intuitiveness: I want this to be easy enough for kids... minimal math and very little to keep track of. Does the layout feel intuitive? Can you glance at a card and immediately understand what everything means?
  2. The "Gimmick": To draw players in... Do you think the galaxy D12s and diamond tokens are a fun way to track HP/mana? Are they a good "hook" to make the game look more attractive?

Would love to hear your thoughts!
