Finally getting started on my Giant Communicant for Trench Crusade.

Built from the classic old Warhammer Giant kit with jewellery crosses, a greenstuff sack hood, and some cheap Christmas bell decorations that were too perfect not to use.

He’s going onto an Imperial Knight base so I could really push the ruined shrine/city feel — texture-rolled flagstones, shattered masonry, and broken slabs cut from old Warhammer Fantasy movement trays.

Still loads to do on the base yet: rubble, texture paste, dust and debris, but I’m genuinely excited to get this monster primed up for our Dragon Hunt game on Sunday.

Wish me luck — and no, those bells absolutely do not jingle when you move him!

As ever - C&C welcome, and let me know what you use for your dragon hunt monster!

Calling this necromancer done and ready to haunt Mordheim.

Started from a Genestealer Cult Locus, then went full bits-box—Necromunda parts, undead details, and a spare sword that just felt right.

I wanted something more lurking and feral than noble—could easily pass as a vampire thrall, but firmly in necromancer territory.

Kept the scheme cold and restrained—blue-grey black robes rather than flat black, with pale, bruised skin built up through thin glazes. Tried to keep everything subtle and moody rather than high contrast the exception being the wyrdstone gem in the hilt and the Aethermatic blue in the skull detail on the sword.

Shout out to Dark Star’s Midnight Shroud wash and Vallejo’s Black Lotus Express Colour—both did a lot of the heavy lifting in the robes and shadows.

Pretty happy with how grim he’s come out. C&C welcome!

Knocked together a cursed city zombie cat to act as my Necrarch’s familiar—his eyes and ears creeping through Mordheim.

One Wyrdstone eye 👁️

One empty socket glowing Aethermatic blue

First time basecoating with Gryph-Hound Orange. On such a small mini too, I'm not going to lie, that was a fight. Well worth it in the end though— and it had to be ginger, my better half wouldn't let me entertain any other colour for a cat!

My next plan is to set it up against the vampire on the base, low and lurking like it’s just spotted something it shouldn’t.

The big issue now though, it needs a name.

Grim, weird, or stupid—hit me with your best!

Finished up another dreg for my Mordheim undead warband — a properly miserable little bastard.

He’s one of two little hunchbacks who skulk around scavenging Wyrdstone for their Necrarch master.

The other one has clearly endured a few “surgical improvements”, so I’m not sure whether this lad has successfully avoided the operating table… or whether he’s so mediocre the vampire hasn’t even considered him worth improving.

He’s armed with a bow for harassment, plus an axe in case anything gets too close. Like his fellow hunchback dreg, he’s also carrying a Wyrdstone shard — this time hanging from the quiver on his back.

The build is mostly:

Poxwalker body

Shaved-down old plastic Plaguebearer head

Empire Flagellant arms

Bretonnian/Empire archer bow

Liberal applications of sprue goo to get the pose right

Painting-wise, I went for pale, diseased skin with Druchii Violet/Strong Tone shading, Carroburg Crimson for the sore areas, and selective highlights to bring out the warts and pockmarks.

Really enjoyed this one. What a twisted little bugger.

Been working on a more charcoal/ashen ghoul look—very much inspired by the grey-toned ghouls from the Mordheim game rather than the usual pale or green fleshy horrors.

Wanted him to feel half-burned, half-starved… like something that’s crawled out of/through a fire pit and just kept going.

Skin was built up over a light base using thin, desaturated layers to get that cold grey tone, then pushed darker in the recesses with controlled washes/glazes to keep it looking dead rather than just “painted grey.”

Kept the highlights tight and slightly chalky to sell that dry, corpse-like finish.

Eyes were a bit of fun—mix of Baal Red, Vallejo Nuclear Yellow, and a generous amount of Contrast Medium to get that ember glow without going full neon. Tried to keep it subtle, more “heat in the skull” than glowing LEDs.

Bones and growths kept warm to contrast the skin—didn’t want everything drifting into the same cold palette.

Base isn’t finished yet, but I’m leaning towards something dark and muddy to keep the focus on the model.

Does it read the way I’m aiming for? Any suggestions for the base?

One thing that always stuck with me from the Mordheim video game was how your warband could just get spooked by ghosts and spirits in the ruins… so I figured it was about time I made a few of my own.

Meet some former residents of the city:

A dodgy smuggler who absolutely pushed his luck too far

A fleeing peasant who didn’t quite make it

A night watchman who definitely checked the wrong alley

All fully kitbashed from random bits I had lying around — wanted them to feel like actual people who died badly, rather than generic ghosts.

Painted them using the “ghost juice” method from Tabletop Minions with a slight tweak:

Ghoul Grey + Matt White zenithal

Army Painter Pastel Seafoam + Contrast Medium + a healthy splash of Aethermatic Blue

Quick drybrush of Praxeti White

Super quick, very forgiving, and it gives a really nice spectral look without overthinking it. The extra Aethermatic Blue helped push that necromantic energy and tie them in with the rest of the warband.

They’ll mostly be there for flavour and narrative…

…but I’m sure they won’t accidentally end up as Spirit Hosts in an Old World army or anything. Definitely not.

The plan is to go fully kitbashed for a full set, so if anyone’s got spare Old World bodies, arms, or especially reaching/open hands, I’ll gladly give them a suitably miserable afterlife if you're UK based!

As ever, C&C welcome - reckon they're a good fit for the City?

Decided my spirit hosts shouldn’t just be generic wisps, so I’ve started building them as… former residents who clearly made some poor life choices:

A dodgy smuggler who absolutely had it coming

A fleeing peasant who didn’t flee quite hard enough

A night watchman who definitely heard something and chose the worst possible response

All kitbashed from random bits I had lying around, and I love how they feel like a little narrative instead of three copies of the same ghost.

Painted them using the “ghost juice” method from Tabletop Minions, with a slight tweak:

Ghoul Grey + Matt White zenithal

Army Painter Pastel Seafoam + Contrast Medium + a generous splash of Aethermatic Blue

Quick drybrush of Praxeti White to pull it all together

Slap it on, let it dry, drybrush, done. No stress, no overthinking.

The extra Aethermatic Blue really sells that necromantic energy and ties them in nicely with the rest of the army.

Honestly, for the effort involved, this might be one of the most satisfying paint jobs I’ve done in a while.

Only downside is I’ve now committed myself to kitbashing 15 more ghosts so I can fill all 6 bases… which felt like a great idea at the time.

Shameless plug as ever for any bits for zombies, spirit hosts or other undead denizens are gratefully appreciated. My zombies are so hungry for outstretched/reaching hands it's crazy!

C&C very welcome, how do you find doing spirit hosts? Is it madness to kitbash 18 spirits? I'd love to know!

Bit of a milestone for the warband: my first proper Mordheim zombie base, and I’ll be honest—this one had me hesitating before I even started.

I pushed well outside my comfort zone with a texture-rolled base, but I’m really glad I stuck with it. It’s added a ton of atmosphere, and feels much closer to that grimy, broken-city look Mordheim deserves. It's definitely a technique I’ll be coming back to now the fear’s out the way.

On to the gravedigger dreg…

This lad’s got a bit more attitude. Went for a rough, lived-in look—muddy, worn, and just about holding together. The shovel felt too characterful not to lean into, even if it’s walking a fine line rules-wise. Not sure I could convincingly sell it as a halberd in a strict game, but for narrative play? Absolutely. Feels like the kind of desperate tool-turned-weapon you’d expect in the ruins.

Pretty chuffed with how both have come together—keen to hear what people think, especially on the base and whether the shovel passes the “counts-as” test?
