Information on truck rollover crash on I-95 express lanes near Triangle?
TL;DR: Anyone know anything about a big crash on I-95 Northbound express lanes involving a rolled over red truck and a white sedan that happened ~2AM this morning? This happened a few minutes after passing the Marine Corps museum so around Triangle or Dumfries area.
I just had an absolutely insane experience while Ubering from Williamsburg to Odenton, around 2AM today (May 17). Our Uber driver was cruising in the rightmost lane of I-95 Northbound when he asked us, "do you see that crazy car behind us swerving?". The vehicle, which we saw was a red Toyota Tacoma when it got closer, accelerated and came up on us and very obviously tried to hit us, once from the side and then several attempts to rear end us, following us from the right lane to the left lane and then even following us to the express lanes that our driver merged onto as he maneuvered to try to get away from this driver. This was at almost 2am and there were few cars on the road so there were plenty of open lanes if the truck wanted to pass us, but it stayed behind us and followed us -- I truly cannot comprehend why.
Once we got on the express lanes and the truck was clearly still following us trying to hit us, the Uber driver called 911 to report what was happening. I remember while this call was being made looking up and seeing the Marine Corp Museum (I just saw the structure and noted it as a landmark, looked up what it was later) on the right side, lit up in the dark. We were in the backseat looking back to read the license plate and take pictures/video as our driver sped up to avoid it and I swear the truck's front came within 1-2 feet of the rear of the Uber car. Finally our Uber driver swerved hard into the left shoulder as he braked hard, and the the truck which had been right on our ass flew past us. We gave 911 the plate number, they said they'd send someone out to try to catch and talk to the driver.
A few minutes later, continuing northbound on the express lanes, we came up on an extremely messy crash. The red Tacoma was rolled over fully upside down on the left shoulder, pieces were scattered across the road, and there was a severely hit white sedan on the right shoulder. Our Uber driver pulled over to the left shoulder and put his hazards on as we called 911 again to report the crash. A large passenger bus did drive through the crash site and then pulled over to the right shoulder. Our Uber driver carefully drove through the crash and we continued on. I've been trying to find any reports of this accident on VDOT twitter accounts or Facebook and can't find anything -- did anyone witness this or hear anything about it? I really hope the people in the white sedan are okay... the red Tacoma was going well over 100mph with clear intent to both kill himself and other people.
