To alter or not to alter
I picked up my wedding dress and it’s really tight around my bust/shoulders area. Originally I thought the fix would just be lengthening the straps, but I went to a seamstress consultation and she recommended something completely different.
She said the real tension point is under my armpit and toward the back strap area, and that by cutting/opening that area slightly, it would release the tension across my bust and chest so I’d have more room overall. She actually said I may not even need the straps lengthened, if anything they might need to be shortened after the adjustment.
The quote for that specific alteration was $600, which feels like a lot when wedding costs are already piling up. But I’m also extremely sensory-sensitive when clothing feels restrictive or digs into me, and right now the dress definitely does that.
She also said the alteration would make me look leaner because currently the dress is compressing everything upward and outward.
I’m torn between just sucking it up and saving the money since the dress technically “fits,” or investing in the alteration for comfort + a better overall look. Has anyone had a similar alteration done? Was it worth it / did it make a noticeable difference?
