What happened at the Election Code Committee yesterday?

Despite Council now getting a large nut (which we voted for) because of all the work they have to do, the ECC met for the first time since they were sworn-in in January and decided to take a summer break until September 2026.

The Clerk gave them a large list of important things that need updated in our election code. The 3 councilors on the committee said essentially, "Why don't you (city staff) go off and work on those things and then come back in September with your suggested changes.".

I don't think this new crew understands that those "important things" ARE WHY WE HAVE an Election Code Committee. Those "things" need to be discussed amongst the ECC, not decided by city staff. Councilmember Potyondy is on this committee and has several years on Council now. She didn't protest the delay.

This committee typically takes a recess in the lead-up to an election. So, in February they'll take a break for all of 2027 (our next election is Nov 2027).

So, this committee, which typically meets anywhere from 12 to 18 months per session will now only meet for 4 or 5 months (I'm guessing they won't meet in December).

Any fellow election nerds out there?

If you've ever wanted to become more aware/involved/knowledgeable about Fort Collins elections, the city has a council subcommittee called the Election Code Committee (ECC).

They meet once a month for about 18 months between our municipal elections. The new session of the ECC starts this Friday, May 15, at 4pm at City Hall.

The councilmembers sitting on this committee are Chris Conway (D1), Josh Fudge (D3) and Melanie Potyondy (D4). The alternate is Amy Hoeven (D5).

Here is a link to the agenda: Agenda - Full - Election Code Committee - 05/15/2026 - MEETING PACKET

Looks like they're going to summarize the Nov 2025 election (RCV stuff, election costs, etc.) and start talking about the agenda for this new session.

They typically do have a public comment section at the beginning of the meeting so we get a chance to tell them our ideas/concerns about FC elections.

There's a zoom link at the top of the agenda packet.
