I landed my first IT job as a CS graduate.
Graduated from the biggest university in my province (prairies) in Canada back in June. Been job hunting for the past 3 months applying to entry level developer roles in the beginning but shifted my focus to IT positions in the last 1.5 months. Noticed I got more attention when applying for IT roles.
I sent out 70 applications, 59 no responses, 5 rejections. I got 1 interview for an entry level full stack developer role, 1 interview for a data developer role, 4 interviews for IT roles. I got ghosted by the company hiring for the full stack role after the 1st interview and then got ghosted by the university hiring for the data developer role after the 1st interview as well.
I started to focus on IT roles more towards the end because there were more entry level roles that were being posted in my city for them. I got to the final round of interviews for 2 companies. One was with an MSP that paid significantly more, however I was not selected. The other one for an internal L2 IT role which I accepted but it paid way less.
I just got through my first week of the new job and it’s been pretty good. I’ve been learning a lot and getting to know my new coworkers. Overall, I am not the happiest with the pay but I am just glad that I have a job and can start building my career. If anyone has tips for me I would really appreciate it!
