PhD student applying for citizenship – contract ended, now funded by scholarship

Hi everyone, I would appreciate some advice.

I applied for German citizenship in June 2025 in Stuttgart region with a PhD contract. At the time of application, I was informed that the expected processing time would be at least 18 months.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding, my contract ended this month. I have been awarded a scholarship instead with €1,700 per month for one year. The scholarship is tax-free, no pension. After paying rent and health insurance, I still have around €1000 per month for living expenses. I have never received Bürgergeld or other social welfare benefits.

I am also expecting to complete my PhD in August. At the moment, I am applying for own funding to continue my work and cover my salary, but the earlies time for result would be next year (even successfully get funding, it will sti be limited contract).

Since I have already been waiting in the citizenship queue for 12 month, if move to another city for a new job, my case might restart.

My question is: would my current financial situation (living on a one-year scholarship) sufficient for a citizenship application? Has anyone had experience obtaining German citizenship while supported by a scholarship, fellowship, or other non-employment income?

Any experiences or insights would be greatly appreciated.
