grandparent struggles
So this story is going to take some explaining. My son's dad died back in 2023, when our son was not-quite-three years old. Before that, my son's paternal grandfather had only met him once. In order to make this happen, I drove across the state when my son was two and his dad and I had a Father's Day lunch with Grandpa. After my son's dad passed, my son has only seen his paternal grandfather twice. It's been more than two years. I drive over to my son's dad hometown every couple months to take my son to visit his dad's family--aunts, uncle, and grandmother--and his father's gravestone. every time we go over there, I reach out to Grandpa and let him know we're coming. Most times, we don't see him. It makes me sad. I'm trying to do everything I can to keep my son's whole family intact, especially since his dad isn't here to do it anymore. I feel like maybe I'm not doing enough.
My own father almost never sees my son, but I'm used to that. I just want my son to have that connection with his dad's family. Am I doing too much? Not enough? I don't know if I'm venting or asking for advice here, but here we are. I'm also married to someone new now, but all of my son's dad family likes my new husband and even call him family now too. If anything I said was unclear, I'll clarify.Also, I do want to clarify I understand that seeing my son might be hard for the grandfather. My son's dad died very suddenly, and I'm trying to be respectful of that grief while also trying to ensure that they know they're always welcome in my son's life, whether I'm married to someone else or not.
